Ear PAIN and all-natural pain relief

In 2004, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that most children with acute air infections could be observed for a period of 48 to 72 hours without antibiotics. We have numerous pediatricians that are out of the box thinkers locally to our Fort Worth Aledo area that are comfortable waiting 48 to 72 hours before prescribing antibiotics. However that can be a long time for mom and baby to suffer at home during that time. This is where holistic care options can offer several effective options for relieving the pain and help prevent the collection of fluid in the middle ear from escalating.

Try using 2-3 of these remedies or can use them all for maximum results!

Garlic Mullein Drops: we all love the soothing ability of the warm garlic mullein drops. Adding 1-2 drops of @gaia in each ear 2x a day (or as needed) can be a game changer for pain.

Rice Sock: a basic but powerful rice sock can be used for numerous symptoms at the house, but our favorite is for earache pain. Take an old large tube sock, fill with uncooked rice, knot at the end. Voila. Instant heating source when you need it. Place in microwave for 20-30 seconds to warm it and place on area of pain for comfort.

Essential Oils: Lavendar is a natural anti-histamine and frankincense is anti-inflammatory. 2 of the biggest culprits for ear infections and then the source of the pain. Rub 2-3 drops of each diluted in your favorite oil (we prefer fractions coconut oil) and then place just behind the ear and along jaw, in front of ear. Extra points for placing some on the end of the rice sock before placing on ear. Our favorites are Doterra.

Homeopathics: one little pellet can be the same frequency (strength) of the remedy versus an entire bottle. Therefore, homeopathics can be a great option for families with small children because they are very gentle and considered safe. If your child seems very clingy, sad, and needing attention, then Pulsatilla, in a 12 or 30 strength every few hours can be most helpful. If child is more irritable and seems very sensitive to pain, then Hepar-sulph, may be their best match.

Pediatric Chiropractic Adjustment: Proper functioning of the eustachian tube depends upon balanced head and neck musculature. Therefore, correcting any imbalance in these structures allows for a healthy function of the Eustachian tube, which is responsible for draining fluid from the middle ear. Look for someone truly certified in pediatric chiropractic by visiting www.icpa4kids.org under “Find A Doctor”. Look for the initials DACCP, CACCP, or FICPA for the most training.

Craniosacral Therapy: The eustachian tube resides in the skull that is formed by a bony canal that travels through the temporal and sphenoid bones. Misalignment or tension in these bones in our little ones can put additional pressure on the eustachian tube. Can you Craniosacral Therapy restore normal function of the Eustachian tube by taking off pressure of the tube and restore normal function addressing those associated bones

DHist Jr: A natural, antihistamine that helps lower the histamine response (what causes the production of mucus), has anti-inflammatory properties, and has been used for a decade in our clinic alone for all things ears, allergies and immune support.

Xylitol Nasal Spray: We know that ear infections can be caused by the inflammation and swelling of the nasal and sinus passages creating more of a buildup within the eustachian tube. therefore, using a sinus spray can used successfully during an ear infection or to prevent one. Xylitol is the sugar found from birch trees that have displayed super skills in preventing ear infections and blocking bacteria which is why it is used in some sugar-free gums to prevent cavities. Our favorite is the X-Clear brand.

Vitamins: Vitamin D has shown to help support proper immune system function. Children during cold a flu should aim for 400-800 IU of D3 a day with some requiring more, depending upon their Vitamin D levels.

Probiotic: More studies point towards gut health having a large impact on overall immune functioning. Choosing a high-quality probiotic is key.

Herbal Steam: inflammation of the sinuses once again can be a big contributor to earn affection and pain. I’m trying to do a herbal steam with a child, and easy way to achieve this is by doing a steam shower. Take a washcloth and add 5 to 10 drops of Thyme essential oil and throw the washcloth under the hot water stream in the bathroom. While the hot water is going, close the bathroom door and let it fill up with hot steam. Take your little one in the bathroom to breathe the steam for five minutes once or twice a day. You are not needing to go into the actual shower, just the bathroom full of steamy thyme.

Echinacea Supplementation: Echinacea has been shown in multiple studies to help support the immune system. Many options in this area for children. One way is to add echinacea in when making homemade elderberry syrup or trying Imu-Max from Orthomolecular.
