An infant or baby can have tightness in their mouth and neck due to the muscle being tight, but there can also be restrictions in motion due to the nerves that supply the tongue being compromised in function. If the nerve function to the tongue is altered, this can make the baby appear as tight or weak.
There can also be trigger points or fascial distortions (areas where the fascia that covers the muscles gets tangled, if you will) that can limit the tongue to move properly.
The muscles that are important for swallowing, including the tongue, have attachments to the bones of the head and neck. If the body is not in proper alignment, then it can restrict the movement of the tongue and lips which can make the baby appear as if there is a lip or tongue tie.
Healing post-surgery can be limited if there is surgery performed on an area that is not in proper alignment.
The goal of bringing your baby in for a pediatric chiropractic + craniosacral therapy appointment is to help normalize their neck muscles, intraoral cranial bones, and the surrounding soft tissues to allow your surgeon (pediatric dentist, pediatrician, ENT) to have better access to evaluate the inside of baby's mouth, function and perform surgery in an optimal alignment and position.
Here at The Chiropractic Place for Mommy and Me in Aledo, Texas, we are able to offer body work, pediatric chiropractic, lactation, craniosacral therapy + other therapies needed to help support you and your baby on their journey
