You may have heard the phrase “tongue-tie” floating around on the internet or in local mom groups. How do you know if your baby’s feeding difficulties on the breast or the bottle are tied to a tongue-tie or other factors?
Several things that we rule out when a parent brings their child in for feeding difficulties are:
1. Tight muscles or fascia limiting jaw opening wide enough
2. Low muscle tone so muscles are not strong enough to support or stabilize on their own
3. Prematurity of primitive reflexes or skills needed for baby to know what they are doing
4. Respiratory or digestive concerns
5. Disconnect in parent to child
6. Medical/Genetic contributions for instability
7. Lip or tongue-tie factors (ankyloglossia)
It may take more than one provider to properly assess all these areas = BODYWORKER + LACTATION SPECIALIST + PEDIATRIC CHIROPRACTIC + PEDIATRIC DENTIST + PEDIATRICIAN + COUNSELOR.
This is why our clinic focuses on being trained in bodywork (craniosacral therapy & myofascial release), board certified pediatric chiropractic, primitive reflex integration, and board certified in lactation + work with International Board Certified Lactation Consultants + skilled local pediatricians & counselors that are keen on early intervention.
It is recommended before the release of a lip or tongue (or even buccal) ties to have bodywork + consulting with feeding specialist to prepare baby for optimal results.
